In commemoration of Bob Marley's 60th birthday, Africa Unite is centered on the Marley's first-time-ever trip to Ethiopia in 2005. Including rare footage of world-renowned reggae icon Bob Marley, the film is more than a tribute: it is at once a concert film, a family travelogue and humanitarian documentary. Three generations of Marleys take part in a 12-hour concert in the capital city of Addis Ababa attended by more than 300,000 people from around the world, with the ultimate purpose of inspiring the young generations of Africa to unite for the future of their continent.
Feature Documentaries
A young Ethiopian-American doctor investigates the spiking rates of HIV/AIDS among African American women, taking us into the lives of her South-Bronx patients, women she meets on a trip to Ethiopia, and her privileged colleagues. Crossing the boundaries of race, class, and country these women, including the Harvard-educated doctor herself, must fight for their sexual rights. Not only a story of HIV/AIDS, All of Us is also a story of resilience, sisterhood, and courage.
Feature Documentaries
Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. has arguably touched more lives than any American since Franklin Roosevelt. Television journalist Bill Moyers calls him “the best all-around politician I’ve ever seen.” Yet, Shriver remains unknown to most Americans today. During his tenure with JFK and LBJ's administrations, Shriver improved the lives of millions by creating the Peace Corps, directing the War on Poverty, and serving as U.S. ambassador to France. Bringing Shriver’s story to life and providing a fresh perspective on the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, this film explores Shriver's early life, his marriage to Eunice Kennedy, his legacy in public service, and endless optimism.
Short Documentaries
In Ghana, West Africa, a rural village eagerly awaits a shipment of recycled bicycles from the United States. Inspiring, determined, resourceful, individuals let us into their daily lives in a dramatic look at how lack of transportation can impact the education, health and livelihood of the community. Ayamye is a moving, life-affirming film that proves sustainable solutions to crisis are not always complex.
Short Narratives
Until this morning, Miri believed herself to be a level-headed, responsible woman who always knows the right thing to do. But things are getting out of control when the life of her son, who is a soldier, is on the line.
Feature Documentaries
With all of the problems facing the world today including war, poverty, weapons, environmental degradation, starvation, overpopulation, and severe desperation among millions, people are longing for meaning. Many seek answers in spirituality, but often faith and religion are hijacked by a fundamentalist few who use the name of God to promote their own ends. With this dichotomy in mind, we call upon key religious leaders, politicians, and luminaries in their fields to tackle the most complex issues in the modern age, and we ask what inspires them to affect positive change. The film portrays experiences that provide a new perspective on how non-violent activism and compassion can be effectively used in resolving even the most difficult disputes. The film also gives hope by exploring past and present religious-inspired movements that have resulted in positive change, in addition to documenting the work of great leaders such as Gandhi, Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama.
Feature Documentaries
Three middle-aged men, former soldiers, travel the world delivering life-saving humanitarian aid to civilians and doctors in some of the most dangerous yet beautiful places on Earth, the front lines of war. Ed Artis, Jim Laws, and Walt Ratterman are the Knights of Malta, and in 1995, they formed Knightsbridge International. Their specialty -- going where death from landmines, bullets, or bombs is as frequent as death from hunger, disease, or the elements. Traveling to such places as Afghanistan, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Rwanda, and the southern Philippines, these three modern-day knights are driven purely by courage and personal convictions.
Short Documentaries
Filmmaker Stuart Kershaw explores the parallels between extremist movements across the political spectrum as he asks the question: What drives a young recruit to fanatical obedience? Kershaw uncovers why the militant Neo-Nazi is so similar to his communist counterpart. How the jarhead marine undergoes indoctrination like the Islamist suicide bomber in Palestine. Exploring the nature of fundamentalist thinking and the death of traditional religious values, this film corners the young men willing to risk everything for the infamy and honor of self-sacrifice, offering a disturbing possibility - that 21st century man might exist without belief in a God but never without belief in a Devil.
